Hypnosis for Relaxation
By admin | September 20, 2009
What do you think of when you hear the word “hypnosis”? A hypnotist swinging a pocket watch in front of the unsuspecting victims eyes telling her that her eyelids are getting heavy? Or maybe you think about a hypnotized person making a fool of himself cackling like a chicken on stage? Modern hypnosis as we know it probably started with Franz Anton Mesmer (Mesmerism) in the 1700s. In the 1800s, James Braid, a surgeon and physician, coined the phrase “hypnotism”. Far more than just a “parlor game” or comedy routine, hypnosis has a variety of benefits. One of the most common reasons people pursue hypnosis is for relaxation. But does it work?
Hypnosis definitely got off on the wrong foot when it was used to make people do silly things as a form of entertainment. Unfortunately, many people have no idea that it is actually a very beneficial and medically proven technique. But, don’t just take my word for it.
Harvard Medical School ran a study with 236 women referred for a breast biopsy. They separated the women into three groups. The first group received standard medical care. The second group received structured empathic attention. The third group underwent self-hypnotic relaxation during their procedures.
Here is what they found: The women who practiced self-hypnosis were the only ones who had a decrease in anxiety and they also had the largest decrease in pain of all three groups. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16959427
If these women could get such terrific results under incredibly stressful circumstances, just imagine what you can achieve using hypnosis for relaxation?
A poll by the American Psychological Association found that 77% of respondents said they had experienced physical stress symptoms in the previous month. 73% stated they had experienced psychological stress. Between our family obligations, our work, and the current state of the economy and society in general, it’s no wonder so many people feel stressed out.
But, there is help. It’s quick, easy, affordable, safe and effective: relaxation hypnosis. You can take advantage of this method by visiting a professional hypnotherapist, or right in the comfort of you own home with professionally recorded CD’s. So, if you’re feeling a bit stressed, consider a medically proven alternative to prescription drugs or just “toughing it out” – hypnosis for relaxation.
